Abstract
The population of immigrants and U.S. natives speaking a language other than English at homewhich represents about one in five U.S. residentshas nearly tripled since 1980. Sixty percent of those were fully proficient in English in 2015, up from 56 percent in 1980. This Spotlight article explores the linguistic diversity of those speaking a foreign language at home, and looks at other demographic factors.
