Abstract
This study examined if prekindergartners' first language (Spanish) predicted their English word reading ability in first grade. This longitudinal study concluded that Spanish oral language made significant direct and indirect contributions to English oral language and word reading. The authors discuss the implications of their research for supporting the development of Spanish oral language of prekindergartners whose first language is Spanish.
