Abstract
This article reports on findings from a multiyear implementation of the Learning Through Performance (LTP) in Middle School project. The LTP uses Project-Based Learning and Performance-Based Assessment approaches to teach the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). In addition to incorporating hands-on learning, LTP includes a language component. One of the results of the project was that sixth grade English learners (ELs) participating in the LTP science instruction project scored up to 28 points higher than their peers on an English language proficiency assessment.
