Abstract
This study compared the reading abilities of fifth grade English as a first language (EL1) students and ELs. The good comprehenders profile included average or above-average phonological and orthographic skills, semantic knowledge, and listening and reading comprehension, while poor comprehenders struggled with these components. These profiles were similar for both EL1 and ELs.
