Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine how prepared kindergarten teachers were to teach English language learner (ELs) students in their classrooms, and the strategies they utilized to teach ELs. Teacher surveys and phone interviews were employed to gather data. Most teachers reported they felt prepared to teach ELs and felt committed to working with these students. They also reported wanting to attend professional training on teaching ELs. Follow-up interviews with some of the teachers were conducted to delve deeper into their responses. The implications for the early education field and ideas for future research in this area are discussed.
