EducaciA3n BilingA 1/4e o InmersiA3n en InglA(C)s: AnA!lisis de la Prensa Escrita de Arizona

Los medios de comunicaciA3n se caracterizan por su potencial para influir la opiniA3n pAoblica. El presente estudio realiza un anA!lisis de contenidos para desgranar las posturas mantenidas por tres periA3dicos del estado de Arizona entre los aA+-os 2003 y 2011 en lo relativo a los programas y modelos educativos para los estudiantes de inglA(C)s como segundo idioma. Los periA3dicos seleccionados para el estudio fueron The Arizona Republic, el East Valley Tribune y La Prensa Hispana. El anA!lisis de los textos analizados (N=84) muestra que, en efecto, las tres publicaciones mantienen posturas definidas sobre los programas para estudiantes de inglA(C)s como segundo idioma. Los periA3dicos de lengua inglesa informan desde posiciones que afirman la hegemonA-a del inglA(C)s y la necesidad de asimilaciA3n de los estudiantes hispanos. La Prensa Hispana, por su parte, afirma el derecho de los estudiantes a utilizar su lengua materna y la necesidad de una polA-tica plurilingA 1/4e en los centros de educaciA3n. One of the main characteristics of mass media is its potential to influence public opinion. The present study used content analysis to examine the stance of three newspapers in Arizona between 2003 and 2011 in regard to the educational models for English learners. The newspapers selected for the study were The Arizona Republic, the East Valley Tribune and La Prensa Hispana. The analysis of the texts (N=84) showed that the three publications maintained distinct opinions about the programs for English learners. The English speaking newspapers informed from standpoints based on the hegemony of the English language and the need of Hispanic students to assimilate. La Prensa Hispana, on the other hand, affirmed the right of the students to use their primary language and the need of multilingual policies in education.
