Abstract
This article by Ester J. de Jong, professor of ESOL/Bilingual Education at University of Florida, highlights the benefits of two-way immersion (TWI) programs. Evidence of TWI success includes ELs in TWI programs performing at the 50th percentile in seventh grade math and reading compared to peers not in the program performing below the 10th percentile. Academic achievement is enhanced because children are able to operate at their highest cognitive level, regardless of their language ability, argues de Jong.
