Abstract
This article is part one of a four-part series exploring heritage language theory, policy, and research. This first section is devoted to synthesizing various definitions of heritage language as the term is used in different contexts in the United States and in Europe. Subsequent issues will cover learner typologies and identification, language policies, and finally, ways to promote heritage languages in the United States.
