TeamWorks, a 3-year project based in the Chicago Public Schools, sought to strengthen coordination between bilingual/English as a second language programs and mainstream programs in order to better serve limited English proficient students. The project began with a needs assessment by Chicago elementary school principals, who also participated in the selection of teachers to take part. Participating teachers attended training sessions in which they developed and implemented plans to increase coordination between the mainstream and bilingual/ESL programs in their schools. Although success in implementing the plans varied from school to school, the instructional competencies of both mainstream and bilingual teachers were enhanced. (cas)
