| Abstract: |
This monograph suggests ways to use multicultural education to ensure educational equity and empower students as socially aware decision-makers. Within the framework of James Banks' (Banks and McGee, 1989) four levels of integration of ethnic content into the curriculum, strategies for multicultural curriculum development are discussed and illustrated by sample lesson plans. Suggestions are offered for modeling multicultural values throughout the school environment in such areas as language policy, assessment, staffing, and classroom practice. Some of the most common questions teachers have before they implement multicultural strategies in their classrooms are also addressed. The sample lessons provided can be used with grades K- 3, grades 3-12, and grades 6-12 An appendix contains a resource listing of publications and organizations that focus on multicultural education.
