No of pages:
This monograph examines the many factors that impact on the educational experiences of limited English proficient students in secondary schools. It discusses three studies of successful secondary schooling for language minority students that provide school, program, and district-level perspectives on ways to serve these students effectively. Findings of the studies are outlined with regard to the contexts of schooling, curriculum, staffing, and program longevity and pervasiveness. The paper then presents a checklist incorporating lessons learned from the studies, and suggests ways that secondary school personnel can use the checklist to evaluate the effectiveness of their own programs and practices for language minority students.
