This guide is intended to introduce teachers to current, innovative methods and strategies that adopt a holistic view about language learning that can be applied to teaching writing to potentially English proficient (PEP) students who may or may not be literate in their native language. The guide outlines the underlying assumptions of the instructional approaches that emphasize self-motivating activities that are stimulating, interesting and meaningful to the student. It also describes such holistic natural approaches as routine writing, language experience stories, dialogue journals, diaries and student- generated creative writing and discusses some considerations for implementing these approaches.
