This NCBE Program Information Guide offers practical ideas for using a Sheltered English approach with limited-English proficient (LEP) students to help them make the transition from English-as-a-second-language (ESL) or bilingual education to English-only classes. The Sheltered English approach focuses on acquiring language in meaningful contexts comprehensible to the student. The theory behind sheltered English is explained, strategies are presented for vocabulary development and integration of second-language and content-area instruction, and the role of the teacher is discussed. Two detailed sample lessons are provided, one on science and one on social studies. Nineteen references are cited. (JWK)
