Kit consisting of test manual, technical handbook, child response booklet, and picture cards. For Bilingual Syntax Measure II, see BE014735.
Designed both as a measure of syntactic development and a culture-fair test for children, the Bilingual Education Syntax Measure can be administered in either English or Spanish. The test consists of 25 prepared questions related to 7 cartoon-type pictures. It can be given to children in grades K-2 by anyone who reads and writes the language being tested, usually the classroom teacher, an aide, or a school administrator. As the child is shown each picture, the tester asks some preliminary questions to make sure the child understands the vocabulary items which are used in the subsequent sections. Then the test questions are asked with the appropriate picture in the child's view. The examiner writes the child's responses down in the test booklet. The test can be used to measure language dominance with respect to basic syntax, structural proficiency in a second or first language, degree of native language maintenance, or appropriate placement for second language instruction.
