This introductory module provides an overview of five major Language Instruction Educational Program (LIEP) models used to support English learners, including Dual Language, Transitional Bilingual, ESL/ELD, Content-Based Instruction with ESL support, and Newcomer programs. Participants will explore the key features, benefits, and implementation considerations of each model while examining how schools and districts select programs to meet the linguistic and academic needs of diverse student populations.
This module provides an in-depth overview of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English Language Development (ELD) programs, including key program models, implementation strategies, and instructional approaches used to support English learners (ELs). Participants will explore staffing, collaboration, assessment, and professional learning considerations while examining how ESL/ELD programs promote language development and academic success for English learners.
This module explores how Content-Based Instruction with Integrated ESL Support programs help English learners develop academic language and content knowledge simultaneously through meaningful, standards-aligned instruction. Participants will examine key program features, co-teaching and sheltered instruction approaches, implementation considerations, and professional learning practices that support effective integrated language and content instruction for English learners.
This module provides an overview of Newcomer programs designed to support recently arrived English learners through intensive language instruction, academic support, and orientation to U.S. schools. Participants will explore key program models, implementation strategies, and supports for students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE), while examining practices that foster belonging, academic success, and long-term educational achievement.
This module provides an overview of Dual Language and Two-Way Immersion programs, highlighting how bilingual instruction supports English learners and native English speakers in developing bilingualism, biliteracy, and academic achievement. Participants will explore key program features, implementation considerations, staffing and leadership strategies, and evidence-based practices that contribute to successful dual language education programs.
This module explores Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE)/Early Exit programs, which use students’ home languages to support academic learning while gradually increasing English instruction and preparing students for success in English-medium classrooms. Participants will examine the research base, program design considerations, staffing and leadership needs, and instructional practices that promote language development, academic achievement, and effective transitions for English learners.
