Abstract
This article discusses the unique social and educational needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Multilingual Learners (DMLs). The Gallaudet Research Institute found that at least 45% of Deaf and Hard of Hearing school-aged children are DMLs. The author presents two brief case studies of a 9-year-old and a 6-year-old who were born in Mexico, are now in the U.S., live in a monolingual Spanish-speaking home, and do not know sign language. The case studies illustrate the educational and social needs of DMLs, and highlight the demands placed on Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and English as a Second Language teachers.
